Cross Docking

Cross-docking is a practice in logistics of unloading materials from an incoming semi-trailer truck or railroad car and loading these materials directly into outbound trucks, trailers, or rail cars, with little or no storage in between. This may be done to change type of conveyance, to sort material intended for different destinations, or to combine material from different origins into transport vehicles (or containers) with the same, or similar destination.

Iggnition’s cross-docking capability allows you to:

  • direct inbound shipments upon receipts to loading area for immediate outbound transport or
  • optionally direct cross-dock items to a forward picking area for immediate picking. For example, you have several on-hold orders awaiting item(s) not currently available in stock. Once the item(s) arrived, instead of being put away before becoming available for order allocation and picking, the item(s) are directed to be placed in a dynamically located forward pick location for ease and speed of order fulfillment.
